Mersin Limanı, Türkiye`nin en büyük limanıdır. 1841 yılında ufak bir balıkçı köyü olan Mersin; 1850 yılında Bucak ve 1865 yılında ilçe olmuştur. 1860 yılından itibaren iskele inşası önem kazanan ilçede 1886 yılında Adana-Mersin Demiryolunun da açılmasıyla gelen - giden gemi sayısında bir artış meydana gelmiş ve bu gemilerin tahmil - tahliyesi için daha süratli çalışma imkânları aranarak, Mersin Belediyesi tarafından önce (Taş İskelesi), daha sonra (Gümrük İskelesi) inşa edilmiştir.
